Background:
The Australian Cattle Dog was obtained by breeding the Collie and the
Dingo. Bred to herd all day, this breed is highly energetic covering huge
spaces and open areas everyday. Originally, this was called the Australian
Heeler or the Blue Heeler. The name heeler was given to them because they
herd cattle in the direction they need to go by nipping at their heels.
This says a lot about their agility as any cow nipped on its heel is going to
lash out with the foot and the Australian Cattle dog has to dodge these on a
regular basis.
Personality:
A hardy breed in the field, the Australian Cattle dog is a delightful
companion at home and also works as an alert watch dog. This breed loves
children, but sometimes it may try to herd them in the right direction by
nipping at their heels. So, they have to be watched around children.
This is definitely not an apartment dog. It is a working breed that
requires a lot of room.
