Background:

The Belgian Tervuren was previously classified as a variety of the Belgian Sheepdog and was separated out into a breed in 1959.  In fact, Tervurens were created from dark fawn puppies that showed up in the Belgian Sheepdog litters.  A distinctive breed with a beautiful mahogany coat with a black overlay, this breed shares all the physical characteristics of the other Belgian sheep herding breeds.  Like them this breed has been used for a multitude of purposes such as herding, guarding, police and military work and as a companion.

Personality:

Generally not suited for apartment life.  A friendly, intelligent, outgoing dog, this makes an ideal companion in the farm or the countryside.

Coat Short, straight, weather resistant coat with a soft under coat
Color Rich fawn to mahogany with a black overlay
Head Flattened skull with a moderately pointed muzzle
Ears Triangular and erect
Eyes Brown to dark brown
Body Square body, deep chest and a level back
Tail Moderately long, slightly curved
