Background:

Very much a people oriented dog, the Briard is an ancient French breed dating back to about 800 AD.  Bred primarily to be a herding dog, this breed needs a good deal of attention due to his unique and beautiful coat.  Though meant to be a herding dog, this is happiest being a housedog spending a lot of time with its family.

Personality:

A dog with a strong herding instinct, this breed is likely to herd children and adult alike to keep them from leaving the home.  Good training is essential to temper this behavior.  This dog is not an ideal apartment dog.  It is an ideal housedog, but it requires a few hours of grooming every week to keep that beautiful coat that way.
