Background:

The German Shepherd Dog is a breed of considerable antiquity, believed to have emerged from accidental crossings of shepherd dogs with wolves.  Though its beginnings are not very clear, this breed is by far the most recognizable and one the most popular in the world.  Initially used as a herder, this dog has performed outstanding work as a police dog, tracking dog, drug detector, military dog, guide dog and family companion.  This is another of the breeds that has suffered at the hands of commercial kennels mass producing puppies for a willing market.  Since this breed had been popularized by Hollywood in Rin Tin Tin and other shows, this breed has faced the unfortunate fate of a commodity rather than an animal with dignity.
