Background:

Of uncertain origin, the Old English Sheepdog was bred primarily as a herding dog to handle sheep and cattle.  A stocky, muscular dog with a elastic, ground covering gait, it has a profuse and attractive coat that is distinctive of the breed.

Personality:

A regular homebody, the Old English Sheepdog is deeply attached to its family and will protect them from intruders.  It is a tolerant dog, putting up with the antics of young children.  Its luxurious coat needs at least a few hours of care every week to keep it beautiful.  This dog does best as a housedog, but it is not a good apartment dog unless exercised regularly.
