Background:

A breed that evolved on the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland, the Shetland Sheepdog is a herder of distinction.  A highly intelligent dog, this breed has also served as a watch dog, companion and house dog.  Though often thought of as a miniature Collie, this breed evolved separately from the Collie.  Of late, this dog has almost exclusively become a companion dog due to its small stature and pleasing attitude.

Personality:

A highly intelligent and trainable breed, the Shetland Sheepdog requires training and socialization starting at a young age to make it a well rounded member of the family.  It is a popular breed in part due to its beautiful coat and good looks.  It makes a wonderful companion both for adults and children.  As it is a smaller dog, it requires less room and exercise than some of the larger breeds and makes a good apartment dog.
