Background:
A short legged, heavy boned dog, the Basset Hound was bred to go after it's
quarry into the borough and flush it out. In addition to its powerful body
structure, the Basset Hound retains remarkable agility and perseverance on the
hunting trail. It also makes an excellent tracker in following the spoor
of the quarry. This breed was recognized in England in 1883 and was first
registered in the US
in 1885.
Personality:
The Basset has strong hunting instincts and if unattended, will follow its
nose wherever it may take it. Otherwise, it is a friendly dog that fits
into any kind of lifestyle and is very gentle with all members of the
family. With careful and consistent training, it is possible to train a
Basset to achieve in the obedience ring.
