Background:

The Beagle is the prototypical family pet with a medium sized body (13 - 15 inches) with a short, easy to maintain coat and a calm demeanor.  However, the main purpose of this breed has and is to hunt in packs, following the quarry in full cry and wearing it out through a long chase.  Hard as it is to believe looking at such a cute dog, it is one of the best hunting breeds ever, following the quarry fearlessly and tirelessly.  There are two varieties of this breed, the standard no more than 15 inches in height and the smaller variety, no more than 13 inches in height.

Personality:

This dog makes an ideal family pet, with its mild, affectionate temperament.  It adjusts well to country life or to an apartment with a brisk walk on occasion.  In particular, the miniature variety makes an excellent family pet in an apartment.
