Background:

The Dachshund comes in three varieties: the smooth, the longhaired and the wirehaired.  It also comes in two size types: miniature weighing less than 11 pounds and standard weighing 16-32 pounds.  This breed originated in Germany about 300 years ago with the purpose of hunting and going after badgers even after they had gone to ground.  Even now it is used as a den-hunting dog in many countries.  However, due to its size and characteristics, the dachshund has evolved into a popular companion dog.  Due to the long body structure, the Dachshund is more susceptible to back problems.

The dachshund is a courageous and cheerful dog that can and does think of itself as larger than its size.  It makes an excellent watch dog, giving warning when necessary.
