Background:
Depictions of this ancient breed appear in caves in Norway dating back to
about 4000 BC. This dog was one of the original pioneers of the planet
having made a lot of journeys with the Vikings all over the known world at that
time. Used to hunt Elk and bear and other wild animals in inhospitable
climes, the breed developed a hardiness that is evident even today. It has
been and is valued as a sled dog capable of stellar performance.
Interestingly enough, the government in Norway retains the right to mobilize all
privately owned Norwegian Elkhounds in the event of war. That speaks
volumes about the regard in which this dog is held.
Personality:
The Norwegian Elkhound is a loyal, affectionate dog around the home. It
does need a thorough brushing every week to maintain the coat in
condition. This breed is better suited for colder climates.
