Background:

Although recognized by the AKC only in 1983, the Pharoah Hound has existed for well over 2000 years in the Balearic islands.  It is believed that they are native to Egypt and were brought over to the islands of Malta and Gozo by the Phoenicians.  They are primarily bred for hunting small game such as rabbits.  They also make excellent guard dogs and will bark at any strangers.

Personality:

They are very calm dogs that are very loving at home and make wonderful companions.  They do need a good amount of exercise everyday in the form of a good run or a long brisk walk.

Color Tan or tan & chestnut with white markings
Head Long and lean with a slight stop
Ears Carried erect, very expressive
Eyes Oval shaped, amber colored
Body Slim, muscular body with a straight topline
Tail Thick at the base, tapering to a whip
