Background:
The Bulldog originated from Great Britain, believed to have ancient Mastiff
blood in its ancestry. Bred primarily for the barbaric sport of bull
baiting and fighting, the Bulldog used to be a ferocious, bloodthirsty
breed. Since this violent sport was curbed, breeders set about gentling
the Bulldog through careful selective breeding until today's gentle, amiable
companion dog took shape. Throughout its existence, the Bulldog also
played other roles as guard dog, military dog and police dog, in some cases with
distinction. Structurally, the bulldog is a heavily built, low slung dog
with a massive head with a multitude of folds in its skin. These facial
wrinkles require daily care to prevent infection.
Personality:
today's Bulldog is a loyal, gentle companion very trustworthy even with
children. This breed required a good brushing every week, but daily care
of the facial wrinkles is recommended. A delightful companion, this breed
does not demand a lot of space and will do fine in an apartment as long as a
daily walk is in the cards.
