Background:
The Chow Chow originates from the northern provinces of China. This is
an ancient breed believed to date back about 2000 years. It did not really
become well known or popular in the West until the mid 1800s when a Chow Chow
was presented to the Prince of Wales. Since that time, this breed has
steadily gained popularity thoughout the world. A unique dog with a
massive ruff and a purple tongue, the Chow Chow had in the past performed tasks
such as guarding property, pulling carts and as a companion. This breed
has also suffered the fate of being consumed as food in some parts of ancient
China. Today, this breed is used almost exclusively as a companion and
housedog.
Personality:
Appearing to be somewhat detached, the Chow Chow is nevertheless a devoted
dog, very attached to its family. The coat of this breed requires regular
care. This breed requires patient and consistent training from an early
age along with plenty of socialization to ensure the development of a well
balanced personality.
