Background:

The Dalmatian, best known as a 'coach dog' or 'fireman's dog' instinctively bonds with horses and runs between the wheels of a moving stage coach.  Of Yugoslavian origin, this trait of the breed made it an ideal match to travel with coaches and guard them at night from intruders.  Used varyingly as a bird dog, guard dog and companion, the Dalmatian is an all round performer.  Wildly popular since the advent of the Disney film 101 Dalmatians, this breed has suffered heavily from unscrupulous breeding.  Compounding the problem, the Dalmatian is a difficult dog to train in the absence of patience and perseverence.  At one point, abandoned Dalmatians were turning up in great numbers at animal shelters.  Fortunately, the problem has abated in recent years.

Personality:

A loyal, people loving companion, the Dalmatian is somewhat independent minded and needs patient, consistent training from an early age.  By nature it is a clean dog and this is greatly appreciated by its family.  Needs some room to run around and work out in.
