Background:

The Keeshond is a midsized dog of Dutch origin.  Elevated to a patriotic symbol during the French revolution, this dog then went through a long period of neglect before gaining favor as a companion dog early in the 1900s.  Originally bred for service on Dutch boats, the breed had to be a smallish, tough, multi-faceted dog with an ability to swim.  Later, this size and its alert attitude combined with its versatility enabled this breed to switch ranks to become a companion dog.

Personality:

A lively, intelligent, alert dog, this breed is ideally suited for apartment life as it was bred to live in the confines of a boat.  This breed is also a good watch dog due to his alert nature and sharp bark.
