Background:

The name of the breed Lowchen stands for little lion dog.  Called so because of the way the dog was groomed, this dog is a fairly ancient one dating back several hundred years.  With a long, natural coat, this dog is usually trimmed very heavily around the posterior and the tail to produce the effect of a maned lion.  This breed is not very widespread in the US.

The Lowchen is an alert and intelligent dog that makes a wonderful companion dog as it was bred primarily for that purpose.
