Background:

The Chinese Shar Pei is a breed of great antiquity, dating back well over 2200 years.  Bred in China as a fighting dog, the Shar Pei has long shed this role, now a devoted companion dog and watch dog.  With the multitude of folds in its skin, this breed is unique in appearance.  It still retains a bit of its fighting instincts and prefers the company of humans to that of dogs.  This breed also has a heartwarming story behind it that led to its rise in popularity in modern times.  When this breed was nearly extinct world wide in 1973, an article appeared in Dogs Magazine from Matgo Law of Hong Kong with a plea to American enthusiasts to get involved and save the Shar Pei from extinction.  The response to this appeal was electric, with several breeders getting involved.  This was essentially the turning point for the breed, triggering a renaissance.  This breed was ultimately recognized by the AKC in 1991.
