Background:

The Shiba Inu is the smallest and oldest Japanese dog today.  The forbearers of the Shiba Inu are believed to have come from China 2000 years ago.  Meant to be a hunting dog in the mountains of Japan, the Shiba is a tough, agile, surefooted dog that hs proved its worth in the hunt.  With its thick, double layered coat, the Shiba can also with stand the cold very well.  In modern times, however, the Shiba has passed into the ranks of the companion dog.

Personality:

Though this breed may seem aloof at first glance, the Shiba is a lovable, loving dog that loves to play and frolic with the whole family.  The Shiba is particularly fond of children.  With its smallish size and gentle demeanor, the Shiba makes an ideal pet for the apartment dweller.
