Background:

The American water spaniel emerged with the contribution of the curly coated retriver and the Irish Water spaniel.  The American Water Spaniel is a strong sporting dog built for hunting in difficult terrain.  It is a strong swimmer with a tightly curled, oily coat that gives it a 'waterproof' quality.  It is an excellent hunter in the water, woods and uneven terrain.  This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1940.

An enthusiastic, eager to work dog which is tenacious, obedient and very responsive to good training.
