Background:

Though controversy exists as to the origin of the Brittany spaniel, it was first shown in France in 1896.  This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1934.  It is beleived to have emerged from the crossing of the Orange and White setter with a french dog of indeterminate origin and named for a province in France.  However, there are those who attribute the origin of this dog to Spain thereby deriving Spaniel from the country of its origin.
