Background:

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated in the United States in an area along the Maryland coast through the purported crossing or Newfoundlands with retrievers.  As a result of its heredity, this breed is capable of handling extreme cold very well, even swimming through icy waters to retrieve downed birds.  It is greatly aided in this by its thick, wavy coat that holds up to water very well.  In springtime though, the coat requires regular care with daily brushings as it tends to shed heavily.

Personality:

A lively, cheerful, courageous breed, these dogs are excellent hunters outside and delightful, affectionate companions at home.  Chessies, as they are affectionately called, require regular exercise to keep in shape.
