Background:

The English Cocker Spaniel like most of the spaniel breeds, descended from ancient spaniel type dogs in England.  However, the breed did not become distinct till the 1800s.  This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1946.  As with other spaniels, the English Cocker is a sporty dog that loves the outdoors and loves nothing more than spending a day flushing and retrieving game in wooded areas.

Personality:

The English Cocker Spaniel is a gentle affectionate dog that has actually become more popular as a family pet than the sporting dog that it was bred for.  As it is a sensitive dog, its training should be humane with no physical reprimands administered.  Regular exercise and grooming are necessary to keep the dog in excellent condition.
