Background:

The Labrador, the Irish Setter and the Newfoundland were possibly used in the development of this friendly, active dog.  Recognized by the AKC in 1915, the Flat Coated Retriever has not always been popular as some other retrievers and sporting dog were more admired by the public.  The breed however, has recovered nicely.
