Background:

A very popular dog in Europe, the German Shorthaired Pointer was recognized by the AKC in 1930.  It is a distinguished looking, elegant dog descended from the Spanish, English and Italian Pointer stock.  This dog is the complete package, serving as a hunting dog, companion dog and a guard dog.  The versatility of this dog explains its strong following and consistent popularity.

Personality:

Although its temperament allows the German Shorthaired Pointer to be a good family dog, this dog requires a lot of exercise, making it more ideal for a person with a fenced in yard or open space where the dog can run at will.  It is a very intelligent, trainable dog that does really well in performance and field events.
