Background:

The Irish Setter is possibly older than any of the other setter breeds, but they do have a common ancestry.  This dog, with a nice red coat became popular in the 19th century and even now, it is one of the more popular breeds in the world.  It is a very good bird dog that does well in field events and trials.  It requires a lot of exercise to keep in condition and this, in conjunction with its happy go lucky, 'rollicking' personality, makes it an ideal dog for a high energy home.

Personality:

It is a noble, happy dog that loves to play and work hard.  It is a very energetic dog that can really go all day long in the field rousing out birds and small game.  It would not make a good apartment dog unless taken for long walks to burn off all that energy.  The coat requires weekly maintenance to prevent matting.
