Background:

The Irish Water Spaniel is an ancient breed descending from spaniels that have been around for nearly 1000 years.  It is a compact well built dog that does great hunting in marshy areas.  Its coat has a very unique texture with tight curls that requires some effort to maintain.  The Irish Water Spaniel is a very good companion dog also, doing well at home and in the obedience ring.

Personality:

It is a cheerful, intelligent dog that loves the company of the family.  It is a hardy hunter in the field.  It does adapt well to city living due to its laid back nature.  It is somewhat wary of strangers and serves as a good alarm dog.
