Background:
Contrary to popular belief, the Labrador Retriever did not originate in
Labrador, but is native to Newfoundland from where it was introduced to England
in the early 1800s. This is a truly versatile dog and serves in so many
capacities worldwide. It has proven itself as a gundog, companion,
protector, guide dog to the blind, police dog and as a tracking/drug
locator. This in addition to its stable temperament and equable nature has
made this one of the most popular dogs of all time. The unfortunate
downside to this of course is that this results in 'backyard' or commercial
breeders churning out dogs of questionable quality that may not have all the
good qualities of this breed. It is imperative to buy from a reputable
breeder especially when dealing with a popular breed such as the Labrador.
Personality:
A well bred Labrador is a gentle, loving, patient dog that can tolerate a
great deal of attention from even toddlers. An untiring companion in the
hunt, an agile participant in performance events and a faithful friend at home,
Labradors are probably what man had in mind when coining the term 'Man's best
friend'.
