Background:

Though the modern day Pointer is believed to have originated in Spain, the forbearers of today's Pointer can be found in paintings several thousand years old.  It is a compact and agile dog that takes to hunting instinctively, coming to a classic 'point' the moment game is detected.  These are highly intelligent dogs requiring schooling from early in life to avoid forming any bad habits and to direct the boundless energy of the dog.

Personality:

The Pointer is an eager to please dog that should be trained early in life if it were to purely be a pet.  They are very energetic dogs and failure to direct this energy in obedience classes or field work may result in dog with a lifetime of bad habits.  This breed is better suited to country life as opposed to life cooped up in an apartment.  However, given the correct home, there are few dogs that make better companions than Pointers.
