Background:

The Cairn Terrier descended from ancient breed from Scotland called the Shorhaired Skye Terrier.  Named cairn terrier for its ability to go after animals taking shelter in piles of rock called 'cairns', this short hardy breed was reputedly bred for hunting otters and other small animals.  Not used much for such hunting anymore, the Cairn Terrier has gained popularity as a pet and companion due to its lively, friedly nature, small size and vivacious attitude.

A lively companion at home, the Cairn Terrier does not require much exercise other than a short brisk walk to keep it happy.  This is a highly intelligent breed that takes to training well and was often used in the past to perform at spectator events.
