Background:
The Dandie Dinmont Terrier gets its name from the main character in a novel
written by Sir Walter Scott in the early 1800s. This breed is believed to
have descended from old Scottish and Skye terriers. Bred to go to ground
after its quarry, the Dandie still retains a strong hunting instinct and will go
after a rat or small animal oblivious to everything else.
Personality:
A very friendly and affectionate dog, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is somewhat
independent minded and does not make the best obedience candidate.
However, its amusing behavior and rather unique appeal with its toupee like tuft
of hair on its head makes this breed a very popular house pet and
companion. This dog adapts to life well in an apartment, only needing to
be kept on leash or otherwise secured to prevent it from taking off after the
neighbor's cat.
