Background:

Initially called the Aberdeen Terrier, the Scottish Terrier originated, as one would suspect, from Scotland.  This dog was bred to hunt Fox and Badger with a fierce passion.  Built to go to ground after its quarry, the Scottish Terrier also has the ability to subdue it when it catches up with the quarry.  This is a very proud and sensitive breed with a hot temper.  Training is necessary and the training should be gentle, using positive reinforcement to account for its sensitive nature.  Its coat needs to be brushed on a regular basis and needs stripping (grooming) at least twice a year.

Personality:

A courageous dog even in the face of considerable danger, the scottie makes an excellent alarm dog.  It is also a playful, lovable dog with the family and this makes it an excellent companion dog.  It is also well suited for an apartment life with regular walks to keep up its lively spirit.
