Background: Reports of the ancestors of the Smooth Fox Terrier date back to 2000 years ago, but the first standard for this breed as we know it today was established in 1876. As these dogs were bred initially to go to ground after fox, badger, skunk and other vermin, the instinct to dig is very strong in this breed. So unless taught otherwise, one is likely to find a lot of holes in the yard after the dog has been out for a while. It still has somewhat of a belligerent attitude making it an excellent guard dog for the apartment or home. Personality: The Fox Terrier is a lively, intelligent, hardy dog that trains very easily. It is also a willing participant in any rough house play that might happen around the house. Due to its affectionate and attractively spirited attitude, this dog is a wildly popular companion.
