Background:

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier shares a common back ground with the Irish Terrier and the Kerry Blue Terrier, having originated from the same area in Ireland.  The newest member of this group, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was not shown publicly at a show till 1933.  This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1973.  Originally bred to serve multiple purposes as a hunting dog, guard dog, ratter, gun dog and a companion, the SC Wheaten Terrier is a quick learner, picking up new things in stride.  Due to its beautiful, luxurious coat, this breed has gained favor in recent times as a household pet and companion.

Personality:

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a courageous, versatile, active  dog.  Not quite as pugnacious as some of the other terrier breeds, the SC Wheaten Terrier makes a good family pet both in an apartment in the city and in the countryside.
