Background:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier also descended from the same breeding that produced the Bull Terrier and some of the other fighting dogs of that time.  Bred primarily to be a fighting dog, this breed has considerably been gentled by careful breeding and makes a good companion dog now.  A well trained, well socialized Staffordshire is a very pleasant dog to be around.  Unfortunately, due to its 'tough' dog label, this is one of the most misunderstood breeds in the US.  While it is true that due to its fighting heritage, this breed has a stronger instinct to engage other animals when provoked, unprovoked and vicious attacks on people and other animals, as publicized by the media, is uncommon.

Personality:

The key to keeping a happy and friendly Staffordshire Bull Terrier is early training.  This breed needs a lot of face time with people to become a well socialized, well adjusted animal.  If you are not able to put in the time to work with this breed, this is not the dog for you.  To counter their instinctive prey drive, this dog must be secured in public.
