Background:

The Welsh Terrier is a compact, rugged dog somewhat similar in appearance to the Lakeland Terrier and bred for the same purpose.  Often housed with with hounds, the Welsh Terriers would hunt with the hound pack running down the fox or badger and once the quarry went to ground, this dog would go after it into the burrow and flush it out.  This breed is believed to be af great antiquity with references dating back over a thousand years.  However, the breed as we recognize it today probably emerged around the early 1800s.  Despite its long history as a hunter, this breed does very well as a watch dog, pet and an active outdoor companion.

A lively, independent dog, the Welsh Terrier makes an excellent companion both for apartments and country homes.  As with any dog, it is better to start training this breed early in life.  The coat requires regular care with stripping to be done twice a year.
