Background:

Of uncertain origin, the Papillon as a breed was perfected by French breeders.  The name Papillon in French means butterfly.  This name was given to this breed in reference to its large, erect ears that look like a butterfly's wings.  Still recognized the world over as the 'Butterfly dog', the Papillon was bred as a companion and lap dog for the nobility of the European courts.  With its erect ear, beautiful coat and gentle temperament, this breed was in great demand throughout Europe.  Even today, it has retained its popularity to a great extent.

Personality:

A small, elegant breed, the Papillon not only is a great pet and companion, it is also an alert watchdog warning the home of approaching strangers.  This breed is an excellent apartment dog because of his small size.  The coat needs to be brushed at least once a week to maintain it.  This breed is very good with children.
