Background:

Said to be over 4000 years old, the Pekingese was the favored dog of the Chinese imperial for many centuries.  Also held to be a sacred dog in times past, the Pekingese is a proud, dignified dog with a touch of obstinacy coming through at times.  Bred to be a lap dog, the Pekingese is nevertheless a dog that can take care of itself.  It is an excellent watch dog barking loudly and defiantly at the approach of strangers.

Personality:

This is a sensitive and affectionate dog with its family, but suspicious of strangers.  The Pekingese makes a good apartment dog or a lap dog.
