Background: Either of Chinese or Tibetan origin, depending on who you ask, the Shih Tzu as we know it today emerged from China. Bred primarily to be a companion and pet, the breed is truly attractive in part due to its beautiful coat and diminutive size but also due to its adorable character. Once introduced to the dog fancy in the Western world, it quickly became very popular. Personality: Built to be a drawing room dog, the Shih Tzu is a hardy breed with the constitution one would expect to find in a working breed. Quite long lived, this dog loves nothing more than to chase around with the children in the yard or curl up in front of the fire or the master's favorite armchair. Well suited to be an apartment dog.
