Background:

The Toy Manchester Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds recognized today.  Originally called the Black and Tan terrier in the 1500s the breed as we know it today was bred in the 1800s.  Also known as the Rat Terrier after the function for it this breed was bred, this dog is an amazing ratter in both the toy size and standard size.  Today, however, it is appreciated more as a companion dog because of its small size and pleasant nature.  It's spunkiness also makes it qualified to be an alarm dog in urban settings.

Personality:

The Toy Manchester Terrier makes an excellent household pet in the city or out in the country due to its adaptability.  Because of its strong hunting instinct, you may want to socialize it well as a puppy if you are planning to have a cat or any other pet.
