Background:
The Akita is native to the Honshu island of Japan. In the country of
its origin, it is treasured to the extent that the government of Japan has named
the Akita a national monument. It has earned its place in the hearts of
the Japanese people with distinguished service as a hunting dog, police dog,
guard dog and above all, as a valued companion. The Akita was recognized
by the AKC in 1973. Since its introduction to the US, the breed's
popularity has risen steadily as more and more people come to realize the
qualities this dog possesses.
Personality:
The Akita is a loyal, friendly dog, tolerant to the children in the
family. However, it makes an excellent guard dog as it is naturally
suspicious of strangers. The Akita also absorbs training very well and
learns quickly. The coat does need some care to keep it looking good, but
for a minimal amount of effort, one could have a faithful companion for life.
