Background:
The Bernese Mountain Dog was originally bred for use as a draft dog, pulling
carts in his native Switzerland. This dog has also served as a herding dog
and a watch dog. Descended from the Roman mastiffs brought to Switzerland
thousands of years ago, these dogs still retain the massive body and the
strength of their forbearers. Near extinction at the turn of the century,
the breed has made a strong come back and has steadily risen in popularity
worldwide.
Personality:
This breed makes a wonderful family companion. It loves to romp and
play with the kids, faithfully following all members of the family wherever they
may want to go. As it requires only a moderate amount of exercise, this
makes a wonderful house pet too. This dog is better suited for cold
weather climates.
