Background:

Created by Frederick Louis Dobermann in the late 1800s for personal protection, the Doberman has, from the beginning, been one the most formidable working dogs.  This breed excels beyond all others as a watch dog, police dog, tracking dog and as a loyal friend and companion.  Unfortunately saddled with the reputation of a 'tough' dog, this breed has a slew of good qualities often overlooked.  When raised in a good home, these dogs are as gentle as any breed on the planet.  Due to its good looks and its 'tough' image, this breed has unfortunately been among the most popular breeds for a long time.  As a result, this breed has suffered from unethical breeders more interested in mass producing puppies than maintaining the quality of the dog.  It is critically important to buy from a reputable breeder when buying a Doberman puppy.

Personality:

An extremely intelligent and easy to train breed, the Doberman must be trained at an early age to channel all that energy.  Given a loving home, there is no match to the love and devotion that a Doberman will give back to you.  This dog will willingly give its life for you if you are threatened.  If abused or ill treated, they have a tendency to shyness and defensiveness.  This breed does not make a good apartment dog.
