Background:
Well suited for life in the cold altitudes of the mountains, the Great
Pyrenees is a member of the mastiff family and counts the Kuvaszok and
Maremmano-Abruzzese among its ancestors. It is a powerfully built dog,
similar to the St. Bernard in its ability to serve as a rescue dog and guide dog
through the snow. This breed also has a strong herding instinct that
allows it to help herding with a minimal amount of training. Despite its
massive size, this is a sure footed, agile and graceful dog. It does need
a lot of exercise, but it is an excellent companion and friend at home.
Personality:
The Great Pyrenees is ideally suited for a rustic life in cold climate.
If given enough work, it will make an excellent companion for a household.
