Background:

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a draft breed of great renown in the country of its origin.  Widespread at one time, helping tradesman draw small carts, they are now a fairly rare breed in Switzerland and outside.  This tricolored dog also makes an excellent companion and guard dog as he is, by nature, suspicious of strangers.  The limited numbers and popularity of this breed has actually helped this dog as the breeding stock is usually stringently tested before being bred.

Personality:

This breed makes an excellent family companion and protector.  Careful training and socialization are needed when they are young in order to temper their natural protectiveness.  Due to their size, they do not make good apartment dogs.
