Background:

A massive dog that descended from ancient Tibetan Mastiffs, this breed is one of the largest dogs. It is sometimes said, 'What a lion is to a cat, the mastiff is to a dog'.  In the past, the Mastiff was a ferocious fighting dog that was used in the dog pits.  However, modern breeders have eliminated this ferocity from the Mastiff so that today's Mastiff is a gentle, family dog that gets along great with the adults and children in the family.
