Background:
The origin of the Newfoundland is rather shrouded in mystery with some
attributing the breed to Nordic dogs imported to Newfoundland and others
attributing the breed to British dogs that were imported to Newfoundland.
Regardless, it is an indisputable fact that this dog has evolved into a
magnificent and multi-talented animal with a devoted following world wide.
This dog is equally at home on land or in water and has often played the role of
a water rescue dog. Though its role in this regard has diminished over the
years, its pleasant personality and friendly demeanor has earned it many
friends, all of them willing to give it a good home.
Personality:
Of this breed, Lord Byron wrote '.. Courage without ferocity, And all the
virtues of man without his vices'. Such testimony about a dog with a
remarkable temperament and boundless patience is evidence enough of its sterling
personality.
