Background:
Used as a herding dog in the middle ages, the Rottweiler originates from the
town of Rottweil in Wurttemberg. This is a well built dog, medium sized,
black with tan markings. Since the turn of the last century, the
Rottweiler has steadily become more popular. As a result, this breed has
suffered from commercial exploitation, with a lot of puppy mills and back yard
breeders churning them out. This has caused some problems with the health
and temperament of these puppy mill dogs. It is essential to thoroughly
interview the breeder before getting a puppy as the quality can vary
considerably between a well bred pup and the puppy mill variety.
Personality:
The well bred Rottweiler is a calm, laid back dog, not easily excited and a
pleasurable companion. This breed does require early and consistent
training. Contrary to conventional wisdom, a well bred, well socialized
Rottweiler almost never exerts its power unless its family is threatened.
