Background:

Descended from the Tibetan mastiff and the ancient Molosser, the St. Bernard was developed by the monks at the Hospic of St. Bernard de Menthon in the Alps range around 1000 AD.  It was not until the 17th centufy that the qualities of the St. Bernard as a rescue dog steadily made it a more popular breed.  Coming in two coat type, short and long haired, the St. Bernard has an amazing, docile temperament with a tenacious work ethic that makes it an ideal companion at work and at home.  This breed has been used as a rescue dog, draft dog, gurard dog, guide dog and a companion over the course of its existence.

Personality:

The Saint Bernard is a hardworking, lovable, playful dog that makes an excellent companion.  This breed loves playing with children and adults in the family.  As long as this breed is given enough exercise, it makes a good housedog.
