Background:

An ancient breed dating back several hundred years, the Standard Schnauzer was the dog from which both the Giant Schnauzer and Miniature Schnauzer were derived.  This breed's existence and popularity are well documented from the 1500s.  Used primarily as a ratter, guard dog and companion, this dog has some of the ideal qualities that appeal to the enthusiast.  With good looks, temperament and a strong working attitude, this dog has maintained a devoted following both in and out of the country of its origin.  This dog has a wiry coat that needs professional stripping (grooming) twice a year along with regular brushing to keep it from matting.

Personality:

Alert, friendly, eager and somewhat mischievous, the Standard Schnauzer makes an excellent addition to any family willing to devote time and energy to firmly train this breed.  This dog is a willing participant in all the family's activities and the culprit behind some of the most memorable pranks.  Given firm guidance, this dog has few equals as a delightful companion and friend.
