Dog Breeds
Dog breeds are the collection of traits and attributes
that define a dog’s family line and background. Before buying
a dog, the different breeds should definitely be researched and taken
into account. Don’t choose a dog just because it looks good –
its temperament might not suit you, it might not be as easy to train
as you’d hoped, and maybe needs more care than you can provide.
Pure dog breeds are classified and recognized by regional, national
and international governing bodies. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is
the oldest national organization in America, dating back to 1884. The
AKC recognizes more than 150 pure breeds.
The Westminster Kennel Club, which dates back to 1876, was originally
a Manhattan organization that raised pointers for hunting and field
trials. Westminster became the first member club of the AKC when the
AKC was officially formed in 1884. Westminster still holds the largest
dog show once a year. For any pure dog breeds, winning at Westminster
is like being crowned king or queen.
